That's what the 9800 did. They didn't even need to release it to compete with NV30 since the 9700 already kicked its ass, but they released the 9800 anyway.
9800 is about on par with the 5900 in terms of speed, but it has better image quality so 9800 > 5900 Ultra.

I don't know the exact specs, but I'll fill in what I know.
    Chipset: ATI R350
Memory Interface: 256bit DDRI or DDRII
    Memory Bandwidth: 21.8 (?? on the .8, just guessing, it's 21.something) GB/sec
    Core Clock: 380 MHz
Memory Speed: 340 MHz (680 MHz DDR)
    RAMDACs: Dual 400 MHz
    Pipelines: 8
    TMUs Per Pipe: 1

It's an Intel vs AMD battle. nVidia = intel, ATI = amd
Intel may have more MHz, but AMD's MHz do more.

5900 ultra has been outperforming the 9800, but i'd still take the 9800.

Read up on nVidia's current driver happenings and watch what happens when all driver hacks for both the 5900 and 9800 are disabled. The 5900 gets its ass handed to it :big grin:
