My CPU just jumped from 45 C to 65 C. Is this normal?

It's an Intel P4 2.8 HT. Usually I notice it at 45 C. I am encoding a DVD for the first time, and notice the CPU at 65 C. Is this normal?

Stock cooling? Those temps are a little high.

at 45C you are not doing much, maybe surfing web or something. at 65C you are utilizing 100% processing power form your system most likely, and it is stressing your rig. when you stress your computer (known as "load") it gets considerably hotter, usually 15-30C hotter. When your computer is just sitting there (known as "idle") it it cooler because the processor is not generating as much heat.

So: you run 45C idle and 65C laod. I would say that is average for stock cooling on your processor, right on par. if you start hitting 70-75C i would look into a better cooler. in the summer time you might get high temps if your room gets hotter.

:werd: DVD encoding is pretty processor-intensive, so it's to be expected that the temps will jump a bit while it's going on.
