is it worth the $1199 price tag?
17-55>the beast IMHO
sure the beast is nice and very sharp but with the 17-55 you get the benefit a wide angle.
AF 28-70mm f/2.8 AF-S
depends on why he's shooting.... if he's going for a good portrait lens, I'd pick a 28-70 over a 17-55 hands down.
I can't say anything about the quality of either lens though since I'm part of the canon crew...
Jesus... was I looking at the right lens? almost $1,400 for it?
Why not get the 24-85mm f/2.8-4D for half the price?
I'll probably get something like that after my next lens purchase (going for a 70-200 or 70-300 next )
After that I want one to replace my 18-55 kit lens (which the 24-85 would do well)
For now though, I love my 10-20mm Sigma
constant aperture > variable aperture
yeah, but i'm not baller enough to drop 1200 bucks on a lens
i always thought the "beast" is the 17-55....
Check out the Sigma equivilant and compare the MTF charts iirc, they weren't too different, and being half the price might make it worthwhile to some.
so whats so beasty about it
It's very heavy. And very sharp, from what I've seen.
I'd rather have the 17-55 and a 70-200
for portraits I'd use a 50mm 1.8 since you can usually always move to get the right composition, thus ok for no zoom.
you think the 17-55 is worth it?
i hate the fact that it's only good for digital.
dont konw how many times ive mentioned this lens already..great alternatives for us non ballers who cant pony up that much on a lens, though I asume once nikon goes back to full frame the beast will really shine.
pic of the beast next to a 35-70
Good pic for comparison!
I have one for sale. It's worth every penny - here's my listing from NC
Lens was bought in September of 2003, body is is pristine shape except for marks from normal use on metal mount from putting it on and taking it off. Used solely as a studio lens so it's stayed indoors and not seen much use since closing down the studio, UV filter kept on at all times. The hood has a few rub marks on it but is in very good shape as well. Glass is perfect front and back, and is sharp as a tack. SWM motor was replaced when I felt it was a little slow under warranty. Sent in for cleaning, rubber grip replacement, and checkup 3 times under warranty (as I do with all my equipment). Comes with original box, leather case with strap, paperwork, 77mm UV Filter, and original receipt from BHPhotovideo. Will gladly handle any service necessary for remainder of warranty.
I'm meticulous about my gear so I'm sure you'll be satisfied by the condition and quality of the lens.
LOWERED - $1100 insured and shipped (paypal add 3% unless e-checking). Pictures available upon request.
This is often the excuse of those who don't own one. Don't believe a word they say.
the beast = 1200-1700
