I heard this from my friend yesterday. I researched this issue and couldn't come up with anything.
Statewide, you must have a Firearms Owners ID to own a pistol or handgun ammo. IL does not allow its subjects to exercise their right to concealed carry, with or without a permit.
The City of Chicago requires all handguns to be registered upon purchase and regularly renewed afterwards. No new registrations have been accepted since 1982. So, pretty much, your friend is right.
You can purchase handguns. My buddy just bought one a couple months ago. I'm not sure about all that registration shit, but I'll be purchasing a handgun within the next upcoming weeks, so I'll let you know how that works out
Come to think about it... he does live in chicago, but probably had it registered in another town since he also owns a house in a western suburb. I live in franklin park so no problem for me.
