Note to windows: Learn to protected your boot files
Still... how does this get past QA...
that's what i'm wondering
At least they caught it quickly and most people weren't affected. The new update is a phenomenal overhaul of the graphics engine and actually drew me into buying the game. They put a huge amount of time into testing the and tweaking the actual product but they fucked up the update software. Though they shouldn't have touching boot.ini anyway. What benefit is there to this?
This is pretty disastrous for CCP. It's going to completely overshadow their release. I'd hate to be the guy who brought this to the CEO's attention. "Uhh, sir, the new update that we're relying on to keep us competitive in our gaming genre seems to be causing our users' computers to no longer start up. On a positive note, those users who can still turn their computers on to give us feedback think the new update is pretty fucking cool."
According to the article, they just happened to name their own configuration file "boot.ini". They had no intentions of modifying the windows boot.ini. Sounds like in the installer, somebody just fat-fingered a setting, or something that told the app to modify starting from the root of the current drive, instead of the root application installation dir.
Wow. They make a good product normally. Gotta wonder how that happened.
Someone's standing in the middle of a circle of developers right now, getting pointed at and laughed at.
I'm thinking a lot worse is happening to that guy/team, and I'll bet KY jelly is not mandatory.
okay, that might explain why we had a couple of people bringing their computer in to get a new installation of windows.
