Myostatin deficiencies are being examined to determine synthetic chemicals which can inhibit the muscle-limiting chemical called myostatin (also known as growth differentiation factor 8.)
"Double muscle" dog with natural myostatin deficiency:
Because myostatin normally restrains excessive muscle growth, a deficiency in myostatin can cause massive and abnormal muscle as seen in the dog above.
Development of myostatin inhibitors are currently under various stages of development and evaluation for their potential to treat various muscle disorders, (and even possibly serve as a real-world "fountain of youth"). Because one does not need to exercise to gain muscle mass while under the growth effects of a myostatin inhibitor, they can be used without needing to go to the gym to build muscle.
Most supplements on the shelves/internet (at the moment, anyways) that CLAIM to be myostatin inhibitors do not seem to work very well and incur many side-effects. Most seem to be cheap and ineffective.
Until a real pharmaceutical comes out with a real viable/safe/proven/reviewed myostatin inhibitor, us weightlifters will need to wait a few years longer for a proper and SAFE myostatin inhibiting substance.
When it DOES come out, it will change sports medicine forever. Can be given to people with muscle disorders, can be given to people who can't move and are atrophying muscle, can be given to people who have a spine fixed by advanced stem-cells to give the atrophied legs some muscle, could possibly be used in the heart to strengthen weak heart muscle.... the possibilities are endless in this regard.
Most exciting is the prospect of combating obesity and causing everyone to look like greek gods. Lets hope this pans out!
