Needs its own thread.

mmajunkie.com said:
Alistair Overeem (35-11 MMA, 3-0 SF) today informed the world he would not be fighting for Strikeforce on Sept. 10.

Strikeforce today informed Overeem his services will not be needed for the remainder of Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix.

In a shocking development, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has confirmed that Overeem has been pulled from the tournament, and Daniel Cormier (8-0 MMA, 5-0 SF) will take his spot in the semifinals of the promotion's heavyweight grand prix.

they shoulda accommodated his request for more time, imo. he fought just a month ago, and to ask for a bit of time to recover and then to have a proper training camp doesn't seem unreasonable at all. whats so special about the september 10 date? just move it back 4 or 6 weeks, and continue with the only thing you got going for you - a legitimate HWGP. throwing in cormier as a replacement just cheapens it

That date has been targeted for a while and it fits into the UFC's schedule. They go on a furious run of events (like they did in June) starting with UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger.

UFCFN - 9/17
UFC 135 - 9/24
UFC on Versus 6 - 10/1
UFC 136 - 10/8

Then they have a 3 week breather between that and UFC 137: GSP-Diaz.

Way to make the tournament even LESS legitimate.

Please do not feed the trolls.

Thanks,

And I dont think we will see him in the UFC anytime soon. Dana has said in the past that Overeem is not the fighter the world thinks he is, and now hes puilling this shit? I say they strip him of the SF title.

Bigfoot Silva

-------

As for Silva, who must now face wrestling-standout Cormier instead of striking specialist Overeem, he seemed rather unconcerned at today's development.

"I don't care who they put against me," Silva today told MMAjunkie.com through his manager and interpreter, Alex Davis. "If Overeem doesn't want to fight because his toe is hurt, then get me King Kong. Get Josh Barnett and Sergei Kharitonov both. I'll fight them both at the same time.

Not a ban bet, but an AV bet. Since Overeem is refusing to fight, I think that should count as a loss. :hsugh:

Zoolander quote and dot if you're accepting AV bet.

Bet conditions:

I take overeem to win, you take silva to win.

Loser has to change av to an av (worksafe) of Winner's choosing to be maintained for a period of 1 week following the application of the av.

"Hey, I won the HWGP! Well no, I'm not the champion. Well no, I didn't beat the champion, either. I beat his replacement after he was cut. But I got this nifty HWGP belt!"

Well I mean really how has Overeem won his belts?

I BEAT PAUL BUENTELLO FOR THE VACANT SF BELT!!!!
i BEAT TODD DUFFEE (who had 6 days to prepare for the fight) FOR THE DREAM HW TITLE!!!
I guess the K1 win was a bit more legit, even though he beat a guy who broke his arm in his previous fight and a old man who was fucked up pretty good coming into the final fight.

But you're 100% correct. Im just saying.

Overeem is ducking Silva.

ducking how? from what we've seen, the sticking point was simply the timing of the fight.

If the September 10 date were to happen, it would leave Overeem with just about 11 weeks between two high profile bouts, whereas Silva will have had 7 months. It's completely understandable for Overeem to want to have the benefit of a full training camp, as well as time to recover from his previous bout before starting it, before going against a top-10 opponent.

Ducking how? They said this works best for everyone. He said no. They said take the fight or we'll take you out of the tournament, he told them to go for it, thinking he called their bluff. After the Werdum fight the knows he has a long way to go before hes ready for Silva, its gunna take more than 4-6 more weeks.

Plus what does he have to recover from? Did he take a lot of punishment standing there with his hand cocked back while Sivla fell on the ground?

i forgot for a minute that zuffa is in charge now. i guess overeem gets to join the rest of the MMA world now in facing ultimatums, rather than having negotiations

hey, he's welcome to do whatever the fuck he wants. but when he pulls shit like this, "fans" are welcome to be pissed. he brought it on himself. what's wrong, can't recover fast enough without a little "help?" :hsugh:

my god, look at the punishment. how can any man, even demi-god overeem, be expected to be 100% ready to fight after this bludgeoning:

I didn't think he would stick around once Zuffa started running the contracts, I will eat my words if he is heading to the UFC though but I doubt thats the case.

At one point Overeem was fighting every 30minutes at random events in Asia he can't pull that excuse.
