a friend's 10 year old typed "sex videos" in google and saw way too much. she's asking me what she should use to block access. her kid is a jerk so I told her to put the PC in her bedroom and lock the door, but she's going to look for software to do her parenting for her so the least I can do is give her advice on software.

suggestions?

I use SteadyState to lock out computer "features" and OpenDNS for the actual content filtering. I only filter adware and stuff like that online, so I have no idea about the porno stuff.

I use it on my sister's computer to lock out myspace and stuff, per my parents, and proxys. Steady State locks out the computer control panel and that kind of stuff.

how about just putting a password on the OS account and not letting him use the comp if he's gonna disobey her wishes
that's what I said but I thought I made it clear she wants software to do her parenting.

pics of the mom?
I'm doing you a favor by saying no. Trust me, she's definitely a fantastic person but she's also someone you'd describe to your friend as "she's a fantastic person!"

lol....good luck :hsugh:. Her idea actually sounds like the only one that would work.

+1 for not letting the kid surf the web unless they're in the same room as mommy.

On the other hand, if this is a teenager we're talking about -- at least you get to find out if they're straight or not. And it's not like there's any socially-acceptable way to learn useful information about sex, anyway.

when my kids are old enough to use the computer, i'm going to make sure i do whatever i can to keep them away from seeing the wrong shit on the internet. that would mean that computer use would only be allowed in very public areas (living room, most likely), when my wife or i were around and with some sort of software in place to catch other stuff.

now, 10 years old is pretty young for this shit, but when i was a teenager, if the internet was available i would've had access to porn. i would've been down there after my parents were asleep and if they tried to lock me out i would've found a way to break in. there are no limits to what a teenager will do to see some boob. so, all i can do as a parent is make it as inconvenient as possible.

if you don't make boobs taboo, they won't be trying so hard.

there are certainly web sites that kids shouldn't see, though, so I agree with the rest. there is some shit on the internet that I wish I hadn't seen.

Children definitely do need to be supervised using the internet, not least because of porn but definitely not most because of porn either. There's lots of shit they need to be steered away from, for their health and the computer's health both.

As for teenagers -- they already got that shit running through their minds constantly anyway. All pictures do is give form to those thoughts. Given the kind of violent, sadistic shit that men in "conservative" societies start doing to women once they can finally release their sexual tension, I for one say: let teenagers know what normal sex looks like as soon as they start getting really curious, because at least that way they won't dive into the dark corners of their imaginations for ideas.

And before you say "there's a lot of deviant shit on the web", yes there is, but well-adjusted teenagers will instinctively think it's gross if they stumble across it. Nobody starts out looking at beastlove.com.

oh, i don't have a huge problem with teenagers seeing porn (by the by, my oldest is 1.5 years old, so i have a few years to go). shit, i saw way too much porn as a kid, much of it on betamax because the kid whose dad had the collection had it on beta. but the kid has to work at it. man, some of the schemes my friends and i came up with to see porn were pretty good, though extremely low tech. a kid also has to have respect for what little boob he can see. if he gets it too easy, he won't respect and appreciate it. :)

good for you guys who have sons.

i got 3 daughters to prevent from whoring themselves online :wtc:

you can take a tip from my father-in-law that seemed to work very well. get a machete for each daughter, show them that you know how to use it (on a tree or bush in the backyard please) and then explain to them what will happen to the guys who you disapprove of. he didn't have many problems with his 2 daughters.
