You want to talk about a tough shooting environment. Taking pics at Sprint Cup race at night is pretty tough. Unless you crank the ISO to 3200 (which I didn't) you have to shoot at pretty low shutter speeds. The cars are moving at 170 to 200mph. But I did have some turnout halfway decent, here's a few...

I need to go through and do some cleanup/cropping/trimming today.

Yes all from the stands. They searched my camera bag and that was it.

Canon T2i with the 55-250 kit lens.

ISO 3200 is noisy at 100% crop.

Also, EXIF shows every single one is either f/5 or f/5.6

Was it a LOL lens or something? Focal range from like 55mm to 250mm on the ones I remember

What do you want me to shoot at? Aperture was about as wide open as I could get it once the sun went down. Otherwise without a tripod I would have sucked out loud.

Pray tell, where on earth is anyone looking at these images at 100% crop, except for you in your own home


Remember who your audience is, and tailor your presentation to them. If 99% of people seeing your images are going to be online and viewing at <1000 pixels, who gives a fuck. Crank the ISO

Nah I figured you were smart enough to open it all the way, which meant those were max values or very near, and the focal ranges made me curious since me and leet were talking about LOL lenses in another thread

I think the lens represents good value at 200 or 250 dollars

Yeah but the sun was still up. Once the sun went down the ISO went up to 800 or 1600 and just stayed there the rest of the night with a few experiments at 3200.

edit: the sun was "up" technically speaking but behind the track so it was pretty shadowed if that makes sense.

It still amazes me that people actually pay to sit/stand and watch Nascar.

Shots aren't bad considering you were in the grandstands with a pretty slow telephoto lens.

I see the appeal for some races (Indy, Daytona, Bristol), but everything else is better from home.
