How do I make a little pop-up like that work?
I just put that at the top of my index.html page?
In between your <head> and </head> tags.
you probably don't need it though, and most likely, there are better alternatives
Well, if I want to let people who visit my site something like a time it will be down, this seems like a perfect choice for letting them know. They can't ignore it.
How do I change that?
I don't think you can change the title of a dialog box. Sorry.
Not unless you create your own, anyway.
go old school
there has to be a better way
it is 2009
people after all do use pop up blockers
that's a really design and very cleany coded (you do it yourself ?), I made a note of your username and may send some business your way in the future. But seriously man, take that js alert shit off there, that shit was cheesy back in 1995...this is 2009. If your worried about it just comment out the links to the under contruction pages
it's called a popunder son
still fucking gay no matter what it is, son
...but its better!
just put a banner at the top saying its under construction. Popups like that will piss people off and won't come back.
time machine to the 90s
just told phasm on aim, i see that i am x'ing out and leaving
but dude he really really wants you to know!
im assuming he didn't, because if he did, he wouldn't be asking how to do what's already on that page?
Haha well a couple of things.
It got past my Firefox pop up blocker and also AdBlockPlus.
Also it's not my site. I saw that on www.computerforum.com I believe and was a little intrigued. I also happened to visit the MSI site the day before newyears and they had one of those things going... except for every page you visited. THAT was freaking anoying as hell.
They're annoying, period. Go to any web development website that actually makes money and I guarantee there will not be a popup of that manner. People associate popups with ads and unwanted advertising which is a huge turnoff if you're trying to sell your product or service. The only type of popup that I've ever heard of that helps rather than hurts conversions is an exit popup with a special deal or exit survey as to why they didn't convert.
That layout has like a 400 pixel content real estate...
Guys, he's talking about using alert(), not window.open. Yes, alert's are annoying, but pop-up blockers associate windows.open with the annoying advertisements pop-ups, not alerts. Which is why it went through his pop-up blocker. Bad terminology on him calling it a "pop-up", because that isn't what it is. I do believe there are better ways to go about this, and alerts should be used very carefully, and in most cases I believe they should only be used in production environments only.
