im looking at an ported XD .40 is there any advantages to having the barrel ported?
for defense or competition?
no reason other then plinking. and possible home defense if anything ever happens
For home defense would probably be a bad idea. The Flash from the ports would probably be very blinding at night. Not that a normal gun doesnt have muzzle flash, but its not in a v shape right by the sights where your eyes are. Another thing is that the front sight will get dirty quicker. So if you are in for a long plinking session, make sure you clean your sights because if you need that gun at night when MR. badguy comes in, you'll be sorry.
you will not only be blined by flash, but also by the cloud of smoke that gets ejected upward through the ports. between the two, after your first shot in a self-defense or home defense instance, don't count on visibility. it's likely to be night, making things worse still.
And if you plan on using it in competition...you can't have ported in IDPA
well there will be no competition shooting.
Go unported, unless you are a girlyman and can't handle a little recoil.
in my experience, porting on a G19 doesn't make a big difference. i don't know what it'd be like on a larger framed pistol.
you're still a loser.
