ART Probably pretty obvious, but a 50mm is not ideal on a crop body + NY pics

I've had the thrifty fifty for a few months now and it's just not wide enough on my 40D. I've been able to take good pictures with it, but I've had to go extremely out of my way for some of them

You can, but you definitely have to think more about your shots. I'd look up at something and think "Oh this would be a nice shot" point my camera and think "It would have been if I had a 17-50 "

concentrate on a particular thing that spells out "NY!" with that lens. or for a scene, you could stitch several shots to make one shot, like a panoramic shot. panoramic shots dont have to be of a landscape

It never occurs to me to stitch shots together...that would have been a pretty good idea for some shots too.

50mm on a crop is pretty worthless...i'm actually considering getting rid of mine because I just don't ever use it.

i jsut sold mine because between my 35 and 85...i never used it...ever.

right after i got my 50 1.4, i got a 35L, and since then i never mounted the 50 except on maybe one or two occasions.

It's a nice length to me, but it's true, its constrictive for walk-about

It's a brilliant walkabout length on a FF though

I'm actually thinking about selling my 50 and my 35

I just don't use either one. An 85 or 20 would be a lot more useful to me I think. (on crop digital and on film too)

I like my 50 on my crop for Portraits but I agree that it's not the best for walking around. 35mm for that.

I agree, I basically hated my 50 on my 40D, but now on my 5DmkII its a great lens.

i *hated* my 50 on my crop cam. i'm ok with it on full frame, but bored. and now i *love* my 85 on ff.

i can't justify that opinion. i just can't. it doesn't even make sense to me.

Sure, just get one of these, jam the aperture lever with a toothpick and focus by hand.

I think i'm stuck in this mode where i want to capture the entire subject in my shot rather than interesting parts of the subject.

That's what happens to me. I think getting it was still a good idea because it forces me out of my comfort zone. There's a lot more thought in terms of my positioning and how I compose pictures as a result.
