How can I find out which bases have MAC terminals and where they offer MAC flights to?
Its amazing what a little google can do.
Thank you... I tried google and nowhere did that link come up
Googled for the following
Good luck getting a space a flight. If someone senior comes along they can bump you. I got stuck in Diego Garcia many years ago because some officer bumped me.
I haven't taken one in years but the times I have, I have been very lucky
I searched for Space Available (seeing as how that's the current terminology for the deal).
I had my first space-a experience last month, going from here (Japan) to Guam, then back about a week later. Getting there was cake. Nobody got bumped, everyone got on (which was not the case at a different base alot of other folks tried leaving from). Coming back was a nightmare.
First day I'm supposed to leave, they canc the flights due to a typhoon. This isn't terrible news to me, as my sign-up date is the day I arrived (not the day I cut my EML orders, about 1 month previous.) and I'm not on either. Next day, the flights are cancelled again, but we hang around the terminal awhile calling for hotels and making rental car arrangements. 10 minutes before we're about to leave, they call the passengers for my flight up to let us know the plane would be leaving in *20* minutes. We basically had NO time to turn in our car keys and cancel our hotel rooms, and had to rush to get on the plane. Oh yeah, also - the ride there was on a C40 (basically a small commercial plane), the ride back was on a C130. LOUD AS FUCK.
quick heads up... we haven't been MAC since the 80's... we're now AMC (air mobility command)
Never been on an AMC or whatever, but I gotta agree with mephisto, C130s are the suckness.
The one AMC flight that came into Okinawa is getting retired in October.
One cool thing about that 130 ride was that we stopped over at MCAS Futenma on Okinawa - my old stompin grounds. We just stopped to grab some food and take on some passengers. Everything looked exactly the same as it had 5 years ago.. but I guess they closed my favorite snack bar (The Windsock, right by the front gate). It was fun getting to see the place I lived and worked again.
you're telling me you don't like the honeybucket?
got a tour of the J model today... it's a sick plane.
I had to fly in a C130 from Germany to Bahrain... I must say it made for quite an interesting experience... I was surprised we got a meal on the flight!
flying in and jumping out of a C130 > flying in a C130
All I remember about 130's is they were either damn hot or damn cold, but almost never just right.
My #2 son is an avionics tech on 130's at Tallil AB, Iraq.
Yeah, my ass wanted to jump out since it was probably 50 degrees cooler outside. But a las, I'm not airborne
One good piece of advice.....make sure you take enough money to get your ass a flight home......
Ive seen it get real ugly when people are waiting to catch C-5's out of bases......
my advice, dont take one........ take another airframe if available
only cause we're the most comfortable flight home, except for the kc-10
Meh....if you like flying backwards...I swear to god you get the worst case of Vertigo flying on those things.....
I took one of those from Travis to Ramstein......would have loved to have taken a KC-10
we deadheaded from McGuire to Travis on a KC-10... it was so creepy being able to hear eachother talking.
thats funny, I guess you get used to being on your own on a C-5
