Question about machines or free weights

    My dad is about 50 years old and he plays the cello and he wants me to help him find a routine for him and ive heard 2 things that machines dont hurt your joints as much then i read here that they do and free weights are better for you. If i was to design a workout for someone that has never really lifted all that much and plays an instrument, keep in mind he doesnt want to get big and he wants to i guess have more endurance. He also has tendonitis (sp) in his right forearm or he had it. So any advice would be much appreciated.
