Looking at buying an 870. Local walmart has the express for $277. Would I find a better price at a gun show or is that a pretty good price for it?

Depends on what you want and what you need. Generally today a new price on a 870 under $300 is pretty damn good. Just make sure it is a usable configuration. For example if you wanted a home defense gun you want a shorter 18" model, and if it is for clays or bird then a 28" - 30". If the one walmart is selling is 6 shot 870 express that is a very good deal for home defense. If you want the longer hunting bird gun then the gun show would be a better place to look.

I would also add that if you could try to buy from the gun show first that would be better. Support your local gun show as opposed to so mega mart.

at the gun show you might find combo deals with the 18" and 26 or 28" for "X" amount, usually more than when only with 1 barrel but less than the cost of a 2nd barrel

I was going to ask the same question pretty soon...thanks for the info Yar.

If I wanted a gun mostly for home defense, and to be able to shoot clays for shits and giggles with a buddy, is there any reason not to get an 18'' 870 and later on get a longer barrel?

Yeah mainly for home defense, so I was looking at the 18" barrel. The wally world model is not the 6 rd. its the standard so I would have to get an extension for it (40-50 bucks?).

Thanks for the info!

check local sporting goods stores that carry guns as well, rem 870's and moss 500's are often offered in different configurations and sometimes buying them already in that configuration is cheaper than buying and doing yourself

i see cabelas run specials sometimes on the 870 or moss 500 with the mag tube extension and 18" barrel for 20 or 30 bucks more than the 870 with the 5 shell tube costs

so many 870's are sold they run different deals almost constantly on them at different places

shop around you might find exactly what you want instead of having to modify the wal mart 870

I bought mine with the 18" barrel with mag extension from this place called Sportsman's Warehouse for $275. That was in June of last year though.
