So I rotated a pic, saved it, quit preview then I drag it in mail but it appears not rotated, wtf?
Yeah, I've had this problem before too. Basically the file isn't overwritten with a rotated version, instead what you have is the original picture and some kind of meta-data instruction to rotate it. And that rotate instruction isn't acknowledged by a lot of programs so if you open the picture in something other than Preview.app then you don't see the rotation.
Maybe someone can fill in the gaps but I think that's basically the problem. Things you can try to avoid this problem:
(1) Save as... and change the format (e.g. from JPG to PNG), this should force it to save a new file and perhaps it will write it as the rotated image
(2) Use another program such as Graphic Converter to do the rotation.
thanks, will check graphic converter. I just need some small app that will save the rotated pic I don't want to instal PS just to rotate pics
Here is an article with some technical details:
Apparently the rotation info is stored in the EXIF data but it has very poor support outside of Preview.app. Based on the comments, the consensus solution seems to be using Graphic Converter.
