My university held a "Thank You Veterans" ceremony. The cadre, absolutely should have been there. The cadets.. they were up on the stage with them.. :ugh:

That is pretty fucking weak. I am a cadet but 4 year prior service and the cadets I work with know better then that. At least I'd hope.

A few years ago I was walking into the supermarket wearing an old pair of BDU pants I got from a friend who was in DS1, and a guy wanted to shake my hand and thank me for my service to the country. I didn't even think it was Veterans' Day when I was getting dressed that morning. I felt so bad about it I never wore them again.

That cadet has got some balls if all he's ever done is salute and twirl a rifle and he thinks he should be honored on Veterans' Day.

So someone who served and deployed for 20 years but never saw combat is not a veteran?

well in his defense as soon as we pin on our bars we are authorized to wear the GWOT ribbon.

However, I don't consider myself to be a member of the military as an ROTC cadet. I'm a senior that's to commission in May and I'm contracted as an A1C in the inactive reserve. With that said I still don't consider myself to be in the military because in order to wear those stripes I'd have to complete basic training.

Yesterday some cadets were talking about going to places offering deals to vets and I said in passing that I'd feel guilty for taking advantage of something meant for a vet. One guy goes, "So are you saying that we aren't allowed to go to these places and get discounts and free food?" I told him, "I'm not gonna, but you can do whatever your conscience will allow you to."

    I LOL at this thread.

I'm gonna be devils advocate. Technically, they are sacrificing their life for the military and the US. If they are contracted their asses are already owned. And they are living a different college experience than most.

I mean seriously though, is there a difference between the huge national guard and reservists who just sit around and don't do shit, never deployed?

There was a douchebag NG cadet in my ROTC, he deployed to Virginia Beach, Mississippi and New Orleans. And he was a "veteran". That fucker was an officer position at the VFW. He used to use his stories to pick up chicks. And of course he was better than us "newbs".

And isn't veteran described as a person who has served on active duty for a period of longer than 180 NON training days?
