Is there a function in python that does what the ruby timeout fuction does?

If you're using 2.6, you can use the multiprocessing library: http://docs.python.org/library/multiprocessing.html. You can get a backported multiprocessing library for 2.4/2.5 from http://code.google.com/p/python-multiprocessing/.
