So the knit tops are appealing because I know for a fact they'd be comfy. I have to come around a little on the style, becuase I'm aware that just about all new shoes now look similar. Not sure how to describe it, but the huge cushioned heel and the tall tongue or whatever is like a sub genre of shoe that I've been on the outside of, looking in on since it got popular. Might be too much to just jump to that from my admittedly conservative current look

no i totally get it man. sneakers now are all a bit more pronounced in all of those areas, but trust me you can pull them off. also most major brands have a great return policy so you can get a pair and if you ultimately don’t like it you can return it.
