start--run--type "cmd" (no quotes, also assuming this is XP)

at a command prompt type "ipconfig" (again, no quotes)

    this is your router's address
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : __________

To password protect it, read the manual. You didn't tell us what brand, what model, what kind of password protection you want, if by "password protect" you meant wireless security.......this is like asking "how do I change my spark plugs. The first question someone's going to ask is "wtf kind of vehicle is it?"

Don't answer any of those questions. Read the book. It's going to give you step-by-step instructions on securing your router.

Then google is your friend. Look for the model number, throw it into google, download the user guide.
