has anyone here tried this? Squatting 4 days a week seems ridiculous
Is that a short term thing? Or would you be squatting 4 times a week for a period of several months?
4 times for the initial phase. Then 3 times after the middle (speed) phase

Smolov is pretty high volume if I remember correctly.
You can squat 5 days a week if the volume is low enough. Over there on Dragon Door's site a lot of people do 2 sets of 5, 5 days a week for the big lifts with excellent results (I've done this as well). But the volume is so low you can do it 5 days a week without overtraining.
Also, IIRC, Smolov's lifters were using roids, so they could better deal with the increased volume.
thats what i was thinking. The routine dictates that you should be fully recovered before every squat session..and thanks for the input falconer as well falconer
