standing..... Got this email from the Severrrrrrrn Camp: The Danger Zone Comes to Michigan! For the first time, “The Danger Zone” is bringing Amateur MMA Cage Fighting to Coldwater, Michigan. With the State of Michigan, Department of Labor and Economic Growth Bureau of Commercial Services, “The Danger Zone” will become the first MMA Company to legally bring the sport to Michigan without the use of Native American Casino’s. Per Mr. Barrington Carr Manager-enforcement Division Technical and Investigative Services, “The Danger Zone” will follow the specific rules put before them to allow these competitions to take place. On March 1st, at the Coldwater High School in Coldwater, Michigan… “The Danger Zone” will hold its 35th official event hosting 12-15 amateur bouts. “The Danger Zone” will utilize athletes training from its official school (and multiple MMA Camps) located right in Coldwater itself to support the local fighting community. We will be accepting fighters from the Midwest to take part in the event as well. Additional information can be found on the official web site at www.the-dangerzone.com. If you are an amateur fighter interested in competing, contact us through the info provided on the website. Dan Severn, owner of “The Danger Zone” has this to say about finally bringing Amateur MMA to Michigan, “Michigan is one of the premiere states with an abundance of Mixed Martial Arts Competitors. It is with great pride that we are finally able to do this with the support of the state of Michigan.” The following are the rules that “The Danger Zone” must follow in order to bring these events to Michigan: (As of 12/21/2007: Knowing that the bill has passed in both houses and is pending to be signed by Michigan’s Governor on January 27th, 2008 ~Current Unified Mixed Martial Arts Rules, with the following exception- *NO STRIKING ABOVE THE WAIST WITH A CLOSED FIST WHILE BOTH FIGHTERS ARE STANDING.*** Why no striking with a closed fist? Because the State views this as a violation of the Michigan Boxing Regulation Act. Therefore, any element of boxing is not allowed in MMA; at this time. No closed fist strikes above the waist in the clinch as along as the fighters are standing. No closed fist strikes above the waist while both fighters are standing. If a fighter is standing and the other fighter is on the ground that eliminates the "boxing element" and therefore YES you can close your fist to strike the fighter on the ground.
