I was wondering this, the mini 14 seems to have a bad rep for accuracy. Why is this? It is based off of the M14 design which is known for it's accuracy, so why is the mini 14 so bad?

No I'm not planning on buying one, just bored and curious.

it's how the Mini's gas block is located, IIRC. Whereas the M14's is just hung off the barrel, the Mini's is bolted around the barrel and onto the stock.
So, it makes the barrel vibrate weirdly, especially forward of the gas block (as an aside, an armorer I know mentioned a buddy of his had a Mini-14's barrel cut to 16.1" and the shorter, ergo stiffer, barrel forward of the gas block made it much more accurate), which makes the bullet go places that aren't necessarily where you intend.

Not that it's not "good enough" for just plinking, but I wouldn't want to try and use one, unless it's an example that's proved itself in actual shooting, beyond maybe 150-200 yards, just because the average Mini seems to be about a 5 MOA gun, and at 150-200 that works out to 7.5-10 inches. Close enough for social work, sure, but getting to 300, and you're probably getting 15"+. Which will probably work, but an equally-priced AR will be (all else equal) giving probably half that. Maybe 2/3.

there are people who love the Mini, but (I admit, I've never owned one) I'm not one of them, at least not until I have some real experience with at least one example.

They came out with a newer one that is supposed to be accurized. I've also heard that the overall accuracy of the newer ones are better than the older ones too.

not so much a myth but you guys have to remember ruger has been making these rifles forever, since 1974 iirc :o 34 years

and they have undergone many different variations of the rifle with the newer ones receiving different sights and even adjusted the gas block so it doesn't launch shells out as high and hard also limited the vibrations that are felt on stock narrower barrels.

also notice the new NRA option has a shortened barrel too

ALSO with the low twist ratio of the barrel a bullet with a lower grain count is preferred has too high causes inaccuracy issues

i like 55-65 as anything higher shoots like crap :o

when i get a new barrel and gasblock from accuracy system it may be different tho
