Hey

I have a raw meet coming up in a couple of weeks and wanted to know what some of the experienced guys think about shoe choice for the squat.

I squat now in wrestling shoes, but have a pair of Do-Wins coming. I have a pretty wide stance for raw and I can hit depth just fine in the flat-soled wrestling shoes. I wasn't sure if the Oly shoes would give me any advantage or not? I know alot of the IPF guys wear Oly shoes :hsd:

I'll most likely go by how it feels in the gym but I'm not going to have a lot of time to get used to the heel and wanted some good opinions.

If you're used to squatting in flat soled shoes, it's too late to make changes now IMO

No I haven't. But I'd never even consider it. A hard, elevated heal is going to do nothing but throw you forward, ESPECIALLY if you're already used to using a flat soled shoe. Don't switch, seriously.

well, keep in mind plenty of the best squatters to ever live squat in heels. most old school squatters squatted in work boot type shoes for a long time.

OL squatters obviously squat with a heel and olympic lifters are the strongest squatters in the world bar none.

your choice in shoes really has to do with a number of things. first, what fed are you competing in? in feds that depth isn't as important (APF, UPA, etc) then a flat sole works best. if you have to get deep (USAPL, IPF, etc) then most people seem to wear heels because it allows you to get deeper while maintaing an upright form.

also have to consider.. are you strongest in the hips/hams/low back or the quads? quad based squatters do best with heels it seems because it allows them to use a closer stance and stay upright.

but at this point do not switch anything.. its way too late.

being a few weeks away, i dont think shoes are going to make a huge difference like say...trying out a new suit or brand new shirt and expecting it to work.

alright, so I'll just incorporate them into my training and maybe use them next meet, we'll see

the federation is 100% raw, they are pretty tight with depth

I agree, but I'm basing my decision not on that they're bad for squatting, but that its going to throw HIM forward because he's used to squatting in flat soled shoes. Changing (especially before a meet) is just going to fuck his squat.

I wanted to post something... but Nudes as usual was spot on.

Let us know how you like the do wins though. They are reasonably priced and a buddy of mine at school bought a pair but never really told me if he liked them or not.
