If you haven't logged in in a few years, give it a shot. There's actually quite a bit to do in the current version. Mining, trade, piracy, etc.. are all in the game and functional. It is still buggy as hell however.

I haven't been on it in a while but there was a pretty well running alpha that got a lot of updates even 2-3 years ago. I'd assume it's pretty decent these days as far as being able to spend time in.

They’re adding a first person element to it though they’ve said they want you to be able to play as much or as little of it as you want. If you never want to touch it you won’t have to and if you never want you fly you won’t have to.
