My dads taken some pretty great pictures from around the world (Laos, Romania, Bosnia, Croatia, etcetcetc). Hes going on another of his little adventures to India and Ley Dac (I have no idea how to spell that) in early 09. He's got an old ass Nikon DSLR a D60 or something (6MP) that is five years old so it's time for him to get something bigger and better. On top of that he wants something to record video and possibly an external unit to record audio (He wants to get some monk chanting and such). Camera will be one of those nice new Nikons d300 or d700 i assume since he already has Nikon glass. But depending on what he should do for video I think he could svae money by getting last generations Nikon used instead of something new. Which bring us to video. He says he wants high def so that the picture is top notch and if something fucked up happens it would be quasi broadcastable. I doubt that situation will arise and I also doubt he'll edit most or any of this footage (He can just barley do basic PP and it took him years to learn email. He's a very analog guy). But having high def source will be another step in the process for him and his current computer wont be able to edit high def very well (nor does he have the storage for it). Now without doing research I told him to get the new nikon that can do HD video recoridng and kill two birds with one stone. He said that the video quality wasnt any good on them? I thought people were all about that? He was also thinking about getting one of those $300 EeePC laptops to bring with him. Not sure of the disk space on those but I assume he could do some image / video offloading on to that. This is a wall of text but what do you all think? New D700 and a bunch of 16 gig cards / the EeePC? Or is he better off with a one generation old Nikon (which?) and some other small video camera (Which?)? And then what about external sound units? Some sort of DAT with an omni mic? he obviously wants to keep gear at a minimum but still do it all in a high quality way.
