http://www.fightersonlymagazine.co.uk/news/viewarticle.php?id=1340 05/11/08 - Alves will fight for welterweight title - at 200lbs Thiago Alves says his next fight will be for the UFC welterweight belt, which means he will be facing either Georges St. Pierre or BJ Penn. Alves has won his last seven fights and has been calling for a title shot for some time. After beating Josh Koscheck last week, he has been offered one. He told Brazilian MMA magazine Tatame that the UFC gave him the option of waiting for the title fight or having another bout in the meantime. “I have the option to wait or do another fight,” he explained. “It’s my choice, but I think I’ll wait.” Alves says he cannot predict who will win when St. Pierre and Penn meet, but he says he is happy to fight either. “I’ll fight both. I’ll get this belt and the next one who comes, with all respect, will fall,” he said. In the interview, Alves also revealed what many observers have long suspected: he is nearly 200lbs when he fights. “I go with 171 pounds at the weight-ins, and then I go to the fight with 198, 199 pounds”, he revealed, adding that despite the occasional struggle to make weight, he does not want to move up to middleweight.
