@michael This seems to be a similar situation, but he got an actual Ft. Laudy PD officer to review his CCP and got in, there’s a YT video of the encounter in there too.

Seems like private security doesn’t know the law, and an active duty officer would have been warranted to allow you in.

So here’s how it went:

We walked up and there was a lot of third party security. Orange shirts, whatever. So I said “excuse me, I have a license to carry a firearm and I have one with me. Is that going to be an issue going in, bc I see the metal detectors and bag searches.”

He said , no guns allowed. I said “ok, can you please have an officer come out here?” He told me to hold on and radioed something. So me, my mom, and my daughter just waited there. Eventually the guy came, pointed at me and said “him?”

Then he came over and I asked whether it was prohibited. He said yes. I told him that this is a county facility. He said it’s run by the performing arts (again, *county*), not the county, and I wasn’t going in with it. I told him his enforcement is illegal. He said “I used to be a cop”. At that point I said “well you’re real fuckin polite”.

Then I told my mother I was going to put it in the car and walked off. He was staring at me, I told him “now you’re going to try to stare me down?” And giggled while I walked away.

Came back, went in without issue. Saw him by a check-in desk or whatever and asked him his name. He gave it to me and I went about my business.

The biggest problem is that when I put the gun back in the car, I accidentally left my daughter’s sweater..so when she was cold when we finally got in, I had to buy a Hamilton sweater..for $70.
Since orange shirt guys and "former" cop don't sound like county employees you might be fucked. Could be a situation where county owns the building but it's rented/operated by some private org for the play. County sounds like they can say it wasn't their employees who told you not to bring the gun, nor their policy.

Being that it is a county facility, you might get by just finding out the managing director of the facility and emailing some of the relevant laws and see about getting the policy changed. In most cases the security folks are just doing what they are told. They aren’t police, even if they used to be.

I doubt anyone would lose their job over it and if they do fuck em anyway. They didn't worry about ruining your night. File suit if you have grounds.

Can I rent a government office, sell tickets to see me naked, and ban firearms from entering? IIRC you should have pistol whipped that ex cop. Or claimed sovereign citizenship.

losing the job is harsh but some consequence would be necessary. we as a society seem to be going down this path of 'only what I choose to believe applies to me' emboldened by our leaders and how media portrays them. I'm not for guns and normally would cheer the situation if this was some random article about an assumed gun nut being shut down, but if people on both sides of the debate don't follow our own laws (even when it grants a freedom we don't personally believe in) then what the fuck are we doing here.

do you think the security dude is the one who made the no gun policy up? or simply enforcing the policy someone higher up created? why would you go after the messenger?

Not who you were replying to but in my experience in hotels/casinos the policy was made higher up but they all support it because they think they're better than the general public and should be looked at as a true authoritative figure. Not to mention they're all bootlickers and the police will generally side with them.

not disagreeing at all with that. but its like getting pissy at the cashier for pricing. they didn't make the decision. you end up quickly in karen territory by going after the low down dude even if they bootlick.

i believe he posted about hitting up the county attry which is a reasonable direction. county attry will go to the policy maker for the county facility.

Agreed. I think he made his initial case to their face, didn't make a stink like a Carl, and went about his night.

Following up with actual legal action is both lol and respectful from his POV.
