Its a great starter kit, but I'd go with a used D50 over a D40 any day.
D40 has no focus motor, therefore it requires certain lenses that can AF by themselves.
This is probably the biggest gripe with the d40, d40x, and the d60. Without an internal AF motor, these cameras can only autofocus with nikon AF-S lenses (or other 3rd party lenses that have motors built in the lens). You can use non-AF-S lenses on these cameras, but you have to manually focus them. Nikon's always coming out with new AF-S lenses, but most of them are expensive (or at least for me they are ).
Does the XTi have an internal AF motor?
