Since you asked. 1996 was the last time a bank collapsed in Canada and the probability of it happening again is extremely low because unlike your country, we tend to fix problems when they happen :o

If I understand correctly we have way more banks. I'd guess it's intended to improve competition. But obviously we have less than adequate regulations.
