Decent story, although I wish I'd printed it out on scrap paper at work; I friggin' hate reading stuff off the computer screen. :p

Edit: Now I can get back to catching up on my eternal backlog of magazines. :o

yall should read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy (Guy who wrote No Country For Old Men). Its basically about a father and son surviving a post apocolyptic event. Great book and easy read and is now one of my favorite books

    Thanks for the link.

Anyone read "Patriots"? I liked that one, but people say "Lights Out" is better.

Well, after this latest 'lights out' thread I decided to start reading. That was a few hours ago. It's now 5:30 in the morning and I've read 150+ pages. They just had the 'big' shootout and turned away at the Ranch trying to get the windmill.

Pretty damn good story so far.

Lights Out was good, and presented in a semi-realistic/informative way on how life in america could be changed forever. Its not the power going out that's the problem. It's that everyone else wants to kill/take what you have.

Did anyone read Lights Out or Patriots and then make any changes? I don't mean any minor changes like making a BOB or buying a few hundred rounds of ammo, but really major changes? Anyone buy some more land or another vehicle specifically for a scenario like this?

Also, has anyone explained it to their wives/girlfriends and had it make a difference? My wife is great: will go shooting with me and loves the Glock 23, but won't touch any of the other guns. She also doesn't mind when I buy guns or ammo... Maybe rolls her eyes because I bought another "toy" but never actually complains, but I really want her to actually practice with a shotgun (my HD gun is a mossberg 12guage with 18in cylinder bore barrel over the door inside the closet.... and she's never fired it) and she's never shot either of the ARs.

I told her the premise of Lights Out and that I would like for her to be comfortable firing any of the guns and she just said "some day". What happens when some day is too late? (and I don't mean specifically a SHTF scenario, but even a home break-in)

I read both. I liked patriots but it seemed like the book started going into way too many details sometimes.

I finished Lights out a few weeks ago. It was a good book, but the ending left a bit to be desired. There was no more explanation of the FEMA camps, no mention of the NWO, or anything after the Election at the end.

Or the super flu. What was the point of introducing it and then not taking it anywhere?

Also. I would've liked a better description of the layout of Silver Hills. I never had a good picture in my mind. Which way was Floresville? How far? How big was Wilson county? How far was it to the Bexar county line ? Etc.

I'm reading it right now, on chapter 5 right now. What I don't like about it right now is that it gives wayy to many details. it's more of a handbook than a novel.

That was kinda the point. Rawles specifically said he wanted to teach/introduce preparedness in a more interesting way than just the usual faq/manual/handbook type of info. Easier for ppl to learn...esp. the casual/ non diehards

I think HF had the same idea, although I don't remember him specifically saying it.

The method of writing is close enough that you can assume his intent though.

Yes of course. And I did reference the map when I was reading the story about Mike & fam's trip down to SH, but it's still something that should've been worked into the story itself.
