I'm starting off and I've been looking into some DSLRs. I don't have a big budget, and even the 450D I'd consider out of my price range. I could pick up 2nd hand bodies such as 20D, D70/80 but then I'd be quite broke to afford lens.

I've looked into D40s, but with no internal motor, I'll probably want to upgrade as soon as I get it, not to mention the lens selection.

    Any ideas? :o

save for what you want because you'll never be satisfied if you dont, and youll just end up buying I later anyway.

Or get a xti right now.

D70/fixed lens like the 50mm. It's a great camera for the money and easy to learn on. It will make a nice backup for when you upgrade as well.

Save for the right gear. This is NOT a budget hobby.

You'll need at least $800-$1,000 to get started, it sounds high, but you're going to drop $300-$400 on the body right off and then you're going to need a good wide to med-tele zoom and that's going to be another $400-$500.

You COULD get a kit lens or a prime, but you're going to be disappointed with the kit lens when the photos are worse than a P&S and disappointed with the thrifty-fifty when you realize you can't even come close to landscape photos. The 50mm prime is optimal for portraits and not much else.

I disagree with this, I shot with a kit lens for the first 8 months, if its your first DSLR then its not a big deal. Use it for a while, while saving up for a nicer lens.

I have the Tamron 28-75. It's an excellent lens that's 1/2 the weight of the 24-70L.

That said, save up and wait about 2 months and the XSI will drop in price anyways. Then you can have the best of both worlds.

i used the kit lens for 3.5 years:o still managed to take some good shots, granted with a better lens they would have been that much nicer but if u dont want to spend a lot and just want to start getting into it then the kit lens should probably do you fine.

If she gets anything but a Canon or Nikon you might as well kill her and yourself.
