So I'm in the process of creating a new website and I'm focusing on one thing at a time because it's just me working on it. Right now (as I'm sure you guessed) I'm working on the forum section of it. So what is it that gets you to join a forum and what keeps you there? I'm creating a forum that mainly revolves around consoles but also will have an OT section and what not. While I'm at it I'll just get these other questions out of the way. Would be the best way to organize the forums and categories? What have you seen that works well? Do you prefer a really flashy modern looking forum that has 3D looking buttons or would you prefer a more simplistic forum (such as the Steam forums?) Light or dark? Is it nice to have extra code in a forum to do things like embed videos and what not? Would you use the extra features if you knew they were there? Would you prefer immediate activation or one where the admins need to activate the account with a section to post before you get accepted (like here) That's all I can really think of right now. Once I get some feedback on these and get the forum sort of set up I'll give a link for more direct advice on making the forum more user friendly and appealing.
