i am starting to feel like i shouldn't have been given my belt...
You don't decide.
The more I train the more I come the realization that it just doesnt matter. Every time something like that comes across my mind, like "how far to purple" I always just tell myself to shut up and train. Its easy to get caught up in gym politics, like who can beat who, or who has the best guard or mount or whatever. I think at the lower belts especially, it doesnt matter beacuse you're still just a blue or purple or white. Just train and get better. Start worrying what is expected of you when youre a brown/black belt.
Nothing is expected of blue belts. Glorified white belt IMO.
So fucking true.
The best way to look at it (IMO) is that all a belt does is hold your gi closed. We've got a guy who is easily a purple belt, but never has gone to any seminars or anything to get given one, and wears a kids green belt that sits in the back of the gym.
I just try to go in and do the best I can and make sure to try and progress, and past that, fuck it.
you wont feel like you deserve your belt until 6 months or a year after you have it. dont sweat it. youll grow into it
Your coaches know better than you do.
i had a question about this topic actually. has anyone ever recieved a belt who didnt deserve it? Like they recieved a purple/brown/black belt but was not skilled enough for it.
i keep missing seminars and shit so i'm a 3 stripe white after 3 years in. Blues + some purps go if they come from other schools once a white belt subs them
I was promoted based on no gi which is ridiculous. They should have just patted me on the backa and told me "you're getting better"
there are a few people out there who will clearly not deserve it but will get it for other reasons.. time put in.. age.. or sometimes cus theyre a girl (yes yes, not hillary.. but a lot of girls suck, and dont know anything)
but most people just FEEL like they dont deserve it, cus they just got it.. it takes some time to feel comfortable with it.
We have "that guy" at our school. 3 and a half years in and I still sub him every time we roll and he got his blue a few weeks ago just due to time here. He's gangly as fuck and really is a poor BJJ guy, but they promoted him due to the amount of time he's got in.
yup! there is always one! but the vast majority of people actually deserve it
I doubt you don't deserve it and you shouldn't feel that way I'm sure. Why do you say that though are all the white belts trying to roll with you and doing better than you'd hope? Haven't you also been training for a good amount of time regularly too?
I've rolled with a blue belt weren't that strong(technique wise) and I've also rolled with a blue belt who should seriously be purple or brown. There is this guy named Brandon down at Dynamic who seriously is sick and still only has his blue. The guy I roll with is getting his 3rd stripe today, but probably should have his blue also.
Don't take it to hard, just keep working at it and fuck the haters, that's all they'll do.
what is expected of a blue belt?
I wouldn't worry too much about it. There is always someone better. If they beat you.. just accuse them of being "all roided up".
Or greasing their gi.
Being a blue belt is fun cause all the newb white belts want to rip your head off... just wait 2 minutes until they gas themselves and then pwn them
lol. blue belts generally suck. so don't sweat it, nothing is expected of you
congrats on the blue
im a blue and sometimes i feel the same way
did u get your purple yet??
jiu jitsu is hard. the longer you train, the more pressure you feel to perform well =/
and the longer you train, the worse your injuries get. its a rough combo
you should be able to beat mike tyson in a streetfight
ya i figure i still have to grow into it... still only 2 weeks or so as a blue... i guess i'll see how i feel in a few months
