I've been using a Creative Zen Micro for awhile now. At the time, it was a lot cheaper than the iPod, but not so much anymore. I probably would still stay from Apple myself, if only because I wouldn't be able to play any of my music, nor continue using a music subscription service.

The refurbished iPods are REALLY cheap, I got a 60 gig for 300$ CAN shipping included. I preferred the Dell DJ's interface but I don't really care, as long as it plays mp3s and it shows album art !

old 512mb Ipod shuffle. Good enough for the gym and it gets pretty abused.

creative zen micro 1gb. Had it for a couple of years. Holds enough tunes for me at the gym, its tiny and pretty durable judging from the amount of abuse I've put it through.
