What's stopping you from moving your cable modem to your room? Well, if you want to leave the modem be, you can buy a Wireless Access Point which has ports you can stick your modem to and buy a corrosponding wireless PCI card for you machine. You can also buy a router/firewall which as the name suggests works as a firewall but also as a wirless AP, you would still need a wireless card or a usb based station which is like a big network interface with usb. plug that in and you're all set.

    router/firewall/access point

    base station

probably much easier and cost effective to bring your modem to your room by running some extension wires.
