...has a USB plug at one end and an RJ45 plug at the other?
USB to ethernet back to USB...
We actually supply that with one of our products, because you can connect the instrument to a PC via USB and control it, this allows you to extend that control to anywhere in the world.
Thought I saw one with some APC UPS packaging.
yeah, pretty sure my ups came with one
Thats not an RJ45 jack...
RS and XS series come with them and some of the small ones too I think.
But you can't directly hook these up via a straight cable, can you? There's a laserbean chip in that cable, right?
Well yeah... there is a chip in the connector itself I am sure, though I have never dissected it but I am sure there is some translation that must take place between USB protocol and ethernet protocol.
Aye, some folks use them with RJ style connectors just to have a locking end on them, or something. Its still USB, I assume - just through 2 of the wires.
Isn't there already a locking USB connector?
You know, now that I look at it more closely, I bet it is APC. It has the part number 940-0127B, which looks a lot like APC part numbers -- and given my prior experience with APC running whatever the hell voltage they want through whatever the hell outlet they want, I can definitely believe they would use whatever the hell connector they want with whatever the hell data protocol they want. Standards? We don't need no fucking standards.
Well, you hook it to a USB port - so I think its just USB.
Yes, but USB is not supposed to use RJ45 plugs, hence it makes perfect sense for APC to use RJ45 plugs for USB connections. That's how they *roll*, as it were.
I think this thread is about 10 posts too many.
So what you're saying is, you're part of the problem.
WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!
AAAhaha, I quote that about once a week.
