Why is the barbell bench press supposed to be better for mass than the db bench press

  1. I hear a lot of people say that and I can't understand why. Shouldn't the db press, if anything, even stimulate more growth because it forces you to use more stabilizer muscles and allows for a greater ROM ?

Kind of like if youre deadlifting and your grip strength is keeping you from lifting as much as you could with straps. Eventually your grip might catch up with the rest of your muscles but until it does you won't be able to put the maximum force on them to make them grow. :dunno:

So you're saying you can't grow a chest without both?

I get compliments on my chest development a lot. My massage therapists say it's overdeveloped! First question is, how much do ya bench? Answer: No idea. Haven't tested a 1RM in years. Hell, I haven't barbell benched pressed in years! So my bench probably sucks. But I have an "overdeveloped" chest anyway from dumbbell benching, dips, flyes etc.

It'd be a pointless discussion. I'd wager all the top BB do, or have done both.

From a bodybuilding standing for as symmetrical as you can get YES. I never said you couldn't build a chest without both. No point in just doing one or the other. Variety is key.

I notice the more I focus on DB chest pressing the more "full" and developed my chest looks. I've experimented with this a few times and every time I switch to BB bench and stop DB bench my chest loses its shape but I get stronger. When I focus only on DB bench and stop BB bench my chest looks much better and fuller but I get weaker of course.
