ART Why pay extra for an SLR camera?

I've been taking digitial photos of my automotive body and paint work and would like higher quality photos for my website.

I use a Pentax point-and-shoot 8 megapixel camera.

It's good, but the pictures lack detail, and I have a hard time focusing on particular areas on the viewfinder.

What advantages does an SLR camera offer?

Here's an example of a before/after I took. Both photos lack detail in the repair area.

You need an SLR with a macro lens. You can then zoom in on a scratch and see the texture that was created by cracks in the paint. Maybe even capture rust spouting.

Even if you got the DSLR for extra detail, you'd need a macro lens to show off your work, and closeups of paint are really hard take since the camera will try to focus on the reflection.
