I was talking to a buddy of mine and he said these rounds are the same as Black Talons...any truth to that?

That's because winchester doesn't want them marketed to public. They sell them as a "law enforcement only" round.

You can find specialty shops that still will sell em though...

Is the 9mm Ranger SXT round a better home defense round than say Hydra-shok or Gold Dot?

I think there pretty good defensive rounds, expand well, dont over penatrate as much as alot of other rounds, I use them in my carry handgun which would also be my goto gun for home defense.

The hydrashok rounds are dated, federal's new round is the HST. You can expect good performance out of the ranger, golden saber, hst, and gold dot rounds. My person pick for 9mm is the 147gr ranger, the ra9t.

I would encourage you to read this http://www.firearmstactical.com/hwfe.htm and then look at some ballistics gelatin tests and decide for yourself what rounds you might want to try though.

It's pretty much personal preference. The differences in performance from one major brand standard JHP to the next is so slight that it's pretty much null. If you put a HydraShok, Speer, Ranger, Silvertip, TAP or HST into someone's heart or head or other vital organ they are all going to do similar damage.

The only things that really matter are reliability in your gun, accuracy of the shooter, expansion when hitting a target with clothing and having enough rounds in the magazine to make sure you can stop the threat.

I carry .40 SXT's in my carry gun. Local gun range had them on sale trying to get rid of them, so I bought 4 boxes.

You change them around every once in awihle right?
I heard one of the main reson for HG KB's was people chambering the same round over and over causeing the round to seat farther back increasing case pressures resulting in KB's

Why? Glock has no problem with it, as long as its a reasonable load and not 2x as much powder as a regular charge I wouldn't worry.

Every time I go to the range, I shoot the SXT's that are in my carry magazine ... then shoot a whole bunch of WWB, then reload with more SXT's when I leave :bigthumb:

That has to do with the barrel rifling though.
