San Antonio police are trying to determine if a shooting on the city's North Side was, in fact, an accident.

Police officers responded to a call in the 6400 block of Fox Run for a shooting shortly after midnight on Thursday. Investigators said they found a 34-year-old man who had been shot in the back by his live-in girlfriend.

The 37-year-old woman claims she shot her boyfriend because she thought he was an intruder.

According to the woman, she and her boyfriend heard someone kicking in their front door. The man went to investigate the noise and she remained in their bedroom armed with a semiautomatic handgun.

When the woman's boyfriend came back in the house she opened fire because of the way he reentered their bedroom.

He was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center where he underwent surgery for the bullet wound to his back. Police expect him to be fine.

Investigators, however, became suspicious of his girlfriend's story and took her to SAPD headquarters for questioning. The woman was later released, but according to police she is still a suspect in this investigation into an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Detectives said there are some inconsistencies in the woman's account of what reportedly occurred. However, they are still trying to locate a potential witness who was inside of the house at the time of the shooting
