seriously? if it doesnt, ill be mad... i really want one...
please share your wisdom
because the vast majority of video on bittorrent is in AVI/DIVX format. Second, H.264 is the format supported by Apple and Sony.
just convert them.
VisualHub can solve that quick.
Just use VLC or download Perian
Those don't help the fact that he can't play it on his TV. He will need to convert it regardless.
perian will fix that im pretty sure
is that an addon for the apple tv?
i downloaded visual hub and its queued up for the next 4 days almost 100 movies to convert from a friends collection...
looks like i should get the 160 gb apple tv
I'm in the same boat. bought an Apple TV thinking I could easily convert all my ripped AVI movies to mp4 that will play on the Apple TV.
So far all the conversions end up turning out like shit
i dont want to redownload them all.. that would suck... atleast i already have 100+ h264 movies too
At times I think about getting a mac, then I realize I love to control things myself.
what can't you control on a mac that you can control on a PC? i used a Mac for a while at work and didn't find any lack of freedom in OSX vs a PC. it was different, that is for certain, but not limiting.
can't use AVI files with your Apple TV? download a converter and convert them to mp4 files.
i had to screw around with some videos to get them to play properly on my XBox360 as well. and it wasn't until just recently that M$ allowed you to play divx and xvid videos on the 360.
No it won't. He's looking to play it on the Apple TV. If he was unable to play the videos on his Mac, then yes it should solve his problems.
Apple TV Hacks, son. Crack that bitch open and install Perian on it, ftw. It might sound like a lot of work, but between this site (and AwkwardTV) it shouldn't be too bad. There's actually a shitload of cool things you can do with that box with a little bit of elbow grease, and the most popular mods already have detailed tutorials for you to follow.
Besides, even doing all the hacking is going to take far less time that re-encoding your collection.
also http://awkwardtv.org and http://wiki.awkwardtv.org
great info... makes me even more excited to get mine
here, I did a bit more research for you, this is pretty much exactly what you need to do to get Perian on there:
EDIT: I lied, this is an even simpler way to do this. I left the earlier steps intact below this, but this new method looks way simpler if you have the necessary resources.
DISCLAIMER: BACK UP your ATV before doing any mods, unless you want to risk fucking it up irrevocably. Awkward TV has howtos for doing this and anything else you could possibly want to do to your apple tv.
Step 1: install SSH *without* having to open the ATV: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Enable_SSH_Without_Opening_the_Apple_TV
^^^This step requires an Intel-native copy of Tiger, btw. Leopard's drivers will NOT work on the ATV. The semthex kernel that step 1 references can be found from this page: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=541. boot.efi can be found enclosed in the ATV update .dmg available as the first link from this xml file (the one with a .dmg at the end): http://mesu.apple.com/version.xml
Step 2: install Perian: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Install_Perian
Here's the original, shittier instructions.
Step 1: get the ATV open. You can watch a fat nerd show you how to do this here: http://revision3.com/systm/appletv/ . Seek to +3:00 min. FWIW, that isn't a terrible video to watch in its entirety, but some of the info is probably dated at this point.
Step 2: connect the ATV hard drive to your computer, using the appropriate adapter for a notebook Parallel ATA hard drive. I don't know if the new ATVs still have PATA drives or if they've upgraded to SATA, so you might want to open the ATV before you buy the drive adapter to double-check. It's probably PATA, though.
Step 3: do this if you have an Intel Mac + Tiger installation, or this if you don't have an Intel Mac.
Step 4: Install Perian by doing this.
if you guys are interested in doing anything else to the Apple TV, here is the holy grail of HOWTOs from the Awkward TV site:
Then I read this so a mac might be in my future again.
problem is i dont have tiger, nor am i willing to downgrade... most of my collection has been transfered over now anyways...
sucks, I still think you should mod it though tiger torrent ftw
Whoa you can hack your apple tv eh? Hmm thats kind of awesome. Whats the deal with having to downgrade to Tiger though? Im not doing that
would an athalon laptop run an x86 osx?
the apple tv runs a slimmed-down copy of Tiger, so when you copy over kexts and binaries to add functionality, they need to be Tiger-compatible.
You don't have to downgrade your computer to Tiger to hack the apple tv, but you do need access to the Tiger binaries. Sometimes you can pull them off an Tiger installation disk (intel-only, remember), but really the easiest way is to have a default Tiger installation available to you on a spare hard drive or other storage partition.
Hacked apple tvs kick some serious ass, I am seriously considering building a car media center PC around one of them. basically I want to do a Mac version of what this guy did:
fucking coolest car on the planet, IMHO.
