do you like watching live sports?
ESPN is pretty much the only reason I still have Sling (which last I looked, was the cheapest option for it). Rarely watch the other channels for much more than background noise at this point. OTA channels for local sports I get through Sling too with Antenna (which is nice to have it in the same app), but I also have a second antenna so I can stream it through Plex if I want. Most the stuff I watch is on Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, or amazon prime anyway. Or.... I supplement through usenet/plex :o.

The providers make it too expensive and stupid to get content these days. I need to just try out the IPTV train.

Live sports mostly...
Youtube Tv is pretty neat during the football season since it has the skip forward button to easily get past commercials if you are not watching live but other than that I don't see any reason for paying for it.

I should just get an antenna and the amazon OTA DVR. Kind of silly paying so much for cable TV when NFL games are free OTA on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.

What is the Amazon OTA DVR?

Again, just for one interface and since I have Sling and they gave out an AirTV, can do my OTA stuff that way easily now.

But I also have HDHomeRun + Antenna w/ Plex. So I can DVR the OTA games there too if I want. That was my original setup that I use less now. I still use it occasionally when Sling is messing up, or if I'm away from home since the transcoding is better.

oh wow, just checked and it looks like it was discontinued. The only drawback I read about it was that you needed to use Amazon TV sticks with it.

Ah yes, I had looked into that. I wanted to be able to watch on my PC and phone, which is why I went with HDHomeRun/Plex.

I have Fire sticks most other TVs but moved to shield for my main TV. Never wanted to be locked in to any device.

Does YouTube tv offer a trial? Considering switching to it

My cable bill is like $220 for TV and fiber internet

I can probably shave at least $50 per month, I’ll need to price out the fiber on its own

Might be because the networks still demand a 21 or 42 minute episodes? or if you would like, black screen silence when the show ends for nearly 10/20 minutes

or an increase in your bill but a full 30/60 min episode.

i bet cable is cheaper than trying to pay for all the channels you want through streaming.

ok, being a bit sarcastic there, but it is probably not too far off.

i think one of the huge benefits of youtube tv and other/similar streaming services is that you can watch them on the go/at different locations (easily).

when i had comcast i was at a relatives house and we wanted to watch a game, i tried logging in my app on their TV and it said something about not being able to connect because the device/location wasn't on the comcast network. with youtube tv that wouldn't have been an issue.

Cost in 2017 $34.99

Cost in 2023 $72.99

that was never going to last, everyone knew it.

i'm just shocked cable companies would rather not lower your bill vs lose you as a customer. they are still providing cable to your home if you keep them as your ISP so the infrastructure is in place and being used. at that time, i was already paying the monthly bill and had been for several years so they obviously made their money and then some. why not lower my bill to a point where it makes sense for me to stay on as a customer vs losing a big chunk of that since i canceled the cable plan...

would be lovely if they offered piecemeal plans. I mainly watch only a few channels but won't get rid of it due to all of the live sports that I watch :o
And now we've gone full circle. This is exactly what we were saying to Comcast and dish 20 years ago.

Playing that game with cable companies is ridiculous every 6-12 months. Fuck that.

when i called to try to lower my bill, they offered a $20 discount or something minor. i told them to just cancel the cable and keep internet and they didn't even try to sell me cable.

they did want to send me an x4 streaming box or whatever comcast calls it, i told them i didn't need one, just internet (the streaming box was free, but additional streaming boxes would have a charge) i asked them to confirm that the were not sending a free box, but they still sent one even after the confirmed it was removed from the order. it wasn't a big deal because i had to send back the existing comcast boxes i had so i just waited until that device was shipped to me and brought it to the store when i brought the old gear back.

i really don't think comcast wants to sell cable/cable boxes, i think they want to get rid of cable boxes and switch them out with these streaming boxes and they'll instruct their customers to connect the streaming boxes to the existing wifi (or possibly wired) network that way they can ignore the rg-6/rg-59 cable in the call, crappy cable connections, etc...obviously they can provide the same content over the streaming boxes (cable channels) and it would likely be less tech visits for stuff they don't want to waste time on (wiring houses, fixing connections, etc).
